Born and raised in Chautauqua County, a rural county in Western New York, LAWTON JAY is an Indie, Indie Pop, Indie Alternative, Modern Rock and Rock artist. The music of LAWTON JAY is authentic, reflective and introspective. LAWTON JAY has teamed up with his father, Todd Tranum, to produce, publish and distribute his music.
Musically LAWTON JAY identifies The Beatles, Coldplay, Kings of Leon, The Killers and the Strokes as his major influences.
At an early age LAWTON JAY demonstrated his confidence and enthusiasm while performing before an audience. He would sing along to songs written and performed by his dad and play on the piano that was gifted to his family when he was 6 years old. During his school years, he would enthusiastically participate in music class and chorus and secure lead roles in plays. From there on, when it was time to leave the house to go to a baseball, football, soccer or basketball game LAWTON JAY could be found at the piano in his team uniform taking advantage of every last second to teach himself how to play. At the age of thirteen LAWTON JAY began writing lyrics, and when he was fifteen his mother purchased a keyboard for him. When he was sixteen, he got his first taste of music production when he and his dad set up a small amateurish studio in an extra room off of LAWTON JAY’s bedroom. With a Casio key board provided by his great grandmother, a Garage Band digital audio workstation, a Shure SM58 microphone and an Apple Mini computer, he started creating and recording music. He could often be heard late at night or in the early mornings singing and working diligently on his next creation.
LAWTON JAY has been inspired by his father to write music and learn how to play instruments. In addition, his great grandmothers played piano and a great grandfather played violin and harmonica. LAWTON JAY was also inspired by time spent in Tennessee. He spent time listening to bands on Broadway Street, visiting Music Row and RCA studio B in Nashville, and touring Graceland, Sun studio and Beale St. in Memphis, which further inspired his desire to write and play music. An epic performance by Jack White and the Raconteurs at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, sealed LAWTON JAY’s desire to continue to create and perform music.
Upon returning from Nashville, with the guidance and effort of his stepmother, LAWTON JAY and his father began renovation of a bay in an old garage on their property into a home studio. World Unknown studio was completed in the summer of 2020 as LAWTON JAY graduated from high school. LAWTON JAY would move to the Bronx to start school at Fordham in the Fall of 2020. While the pandemic would put a damper on hist first semester at college, it would also be a source of inspiration for LAWTON JAY as he used this challenging time to write and create new music.
When he is not in the studio, LAWTON JAY may be found working at a local restaurant, wake surfing or hanging out with friends. LAWTON JAY is studying Computer Science at Fordham University in NYC.
